Time to weigh anchor :: nautical themes

Despite being raised and educated in land lock locations I really like to think of myself as a seafarer. My maternal Grandfather ran away to sea from the UK and ended up in Australia as signal master for Macquarie Lighthouse – Australia’s first lighthouse. My favourite uncle was in the merchant navy and could tie every knot imaginable. On my 21st birthday he sent me three charms for my charm bracelet; a key with the number 21, a horn and an anchor. He had bought them in Adelaide, sent them in Sydney on his way to the Persian Gulf. The inscription on the card read ‘now you are 21 you can weigh anchor and blow your horn’. So you see – it really is in my blood.

  1. It’s funny. I’m one of the rare people who doesn’t much like the beach, and I find the ocean a bit scary…but anything with a nautical theme just captures my heart! These are all so gorgeous!

  2. Love the story about your grandfather.

These images are great. I am particularly taken with the one of the girl in the boat with the tree. Soaring off to where? Wherever her heart takes her? To follow her dreams?

    So beautiful and dreamy.

  3. I understand the fear that can be instilled by the scary ocean, even though it does draw me. One crash on the biscay and a collision in calm water (no one in the wheelhouse) has made me timid to the tide. I love everything nautical – I do the code flags at http://www.bexpert.etsy.com.
