Joining in :: colour palette blog walk

Printed fabric and colour swatch

I’m so excited to be taking part in the colour palette blog walk today, all organised by Brandi at Brandi Girl Blog.

The task was easy, create a colour palette around the theme of achievements. How we interpreted that was entirely up to us. I would have posted photos of my boys, except that I’m against doing that, because they are by far my biggest achievement. So instead I went for a very small achievement towards a long term goal. For those that know me well they know my love of fabric and how, one day, I would like to design and print my own. A year or so ago I went from dreaming about the process and took part in a print workshop for 2 days. This weekend I’m back at the same print workshop to refresh my skills and now I’m a member I can hire out the facilities and get to work.

This (not very successful) photo is of my ‘test’ fabric I used throughout the course. It was where I tried things out and tested the colours I had mixed. I recently had a friend ask if she could buy it from me and the tea towel I made her during this course she has framed it and hung it in her bedroom – makes me a little closer to my dream. And just as an aside – in the final print run I replaced the orange with a grey. I wish I hadn’t done that because I think the orange rocks!

Now – go check out my fellow colour palette blog walk participants – you’ll have fun.

  1. What an AWESOME achievement, Libby! That’s got to feel incredible, seeing a finished print.

It doesn’t surprise me to hear you’d like to get into fabric design (or is that surface design? I never got the two straight, forgive me), what with your love for pattern and color. Do you design fabric on the computer or in person? Is that fabric silk-screened?

And being a fabric lover, I’m sure you’ve heard of Spoonflower, right? I can get sucked into that website for hours.

I guess it is fabric design. I think of surface design as objects and not just fabric. Yes I’m very aware of Spoonflower and have had some designs printed with them. This one is screen printed and that’s what I’ll be doing on the weekend too.

  2. What a great achievement 🙂 and I love the design . its so beautiful . Gorgeous colour palette ! I would love to do a print workshop and get my hands messy. I love patterns and all that goes along with it too . Its so exciting to connect with like minded folks .
Congrats on working on your dreams – I read somewhere : Your dreams won’t come true if you don’t wake up 🙂

  3. Learning new things is so wonderful, isn’t it? And I love, love, love the colors in your test print – you’re right, that orange rocks. Can’t wait to see what else you do with the new skills you’re working on.

  4. That’s a great achievement-working toward fulfilling your goal. I think you are well on your way. The design and color palette are fantastic. I look forward to seeing where you go with this.

  7. Hooray for taking that step towards your dream, and how wonderfully validating that your friend encouraged you to keep going in that direction.

I don’t know anything about the technical aspects of printing on fabric… but I know I would like to see more from you!

Thanks Dave. I’m still kicking myself over that bad colour decision.

  10. Libby Libby Libby!! I feel like chanting and cheering for you! I like that you found your palette in a work in progress and long term goal. I just wrote about how art life is a work in progress and nothing is really, truly finished so this touched my heart a bit! I wish you luck in your fabric adventures. I am a tactile texture lover and I think you would be awesome at it. And will be! =)
