Creating a zine

One spread from the surface zine showcasing Heather Moore

Spread from a zine showcasing Danish motifs

Do you remember way back when I was talking of creating a ‘zine’? I really didn’t know what they were but the brief for this assignment was to create a zine around something you’re interested in that could be used as one is a series. My idea was to create a zine called Surface, that is devoted to surface design around the globe. This issue focused on Scandinavian surface design and I included some of my own patterns and photos as well as the work of other artists – like the super talented Heather Moore from Skinny laMinx. I sent Heather an email asking if she’d consider answering one question and she did! I was beyond excited. You know I should also point out that I asked 2 other artists the same question and they never replied – hmmm.

So here are my two favourite spreads from the zine, click on them to get the full effect.

All imagery in the first spread is © Heather Moore at Skinny laMinx.

  1. Absolutely great zine! Is this just a test? Then I say keep going! I want to see more!!

    1. Ha! Thanks Mary. I was thinking the same thing when I started. I could totally fill an new issue at least 4 times a year.

  2. Despite your worries about the zine it actually looks like you had some fun with it. That’s how it feels. I like the little page numbers too.

  3. I actually remember you talking about your love for Scandinavian design and textiles a while back. I actually think I commented on you printing on fabric and creating a collection. I think this digi-zine really does the trick to get you started. Everything is tough in the beginning but I think it turned out great! I love the colors you chose and it’s so simple that it can be used on mood boards or inspiration boards. I want to see things like this published for sure.

And remember, making the zines over time will make you want to make your prints and patterns to feature in your own zine! It’s a never ending circle of creativity. You have already answered your own questions. Go figure! lol =P

    1. Hey thanks Roni! You’re definitely right, putting this zine together really inspired me towards creating more patterns.

  4. It’s beautiful!

  5. […] been going a little crazy making cushions lately. The bug began with the one on the top right, remember my Zine that I had to create for a Uni task? Well in celebration of my topic of Scandinavian surface design […]
