Thinking about :: watercolour in web design

4 images of watercolour products for web sites

My work as both User Experience Consultant and theme developer allows me to keep track of trends in web design. I guess I’m fortunate to see what’s going on in corporate sites and also in independent and niche sites. I’ve been really enjoying the watercolour trend that has been around for quite a while now. I love the move away from the glossy buttons and straight lines to the uneven shapes and colours that are synonymous with watercolour.

I’m not sure how many of these elements are first created with paint or if they are all digitally produced. I have recently discovered a cool iPad app called Paper that creates the most realistic digital watercolour I have seen. I’ve taken to ‘painting’ blocks of colour to use in my projects. I think the watercolour look adds a quirkiness and personality to blog designs that I personally enjoy. I especially love when watercolour elements are used for small parts of the overall design. What do you think? Are you a fan or not?

My watercolour finds are all via Etsy:

  1. My very own 88 Watercolour Social Media icons are available from my Crimson Pear Etsy Store and my Crimson Pear Web Shop
  2. Hand Drawn Watercolor Social Icons Clipart for Blog and Web – Twitter, Blogger, Google Plus, Pinterest, Instagram, RSS, Flickr, Facebook from Reani Designs Etsy Store
  3. etsy shop kit – banners, avatars, and listing graphics – whimsical watercolor with bird silhouette from Dinosaur Stew Etsy Store
  4. Coral Ombre Navigation Icon Set from Shh Maker Design Etsy Store

I LOVE the watercolor trend, too! So much that I had to add a tiny bit of it in my newest blog header. I’m hoping it’ll stay around for a while longer; I love the organic feel of it.

    1. That’s right – your header is lovely. I think it adds an unexpected element that I just enjoy.

  2. TY soooo much for sharing. im a fellow BYWer & just saw your post on the FB page & found this link!

  3. Watercolor rocks. BUT the Paper app is soooo good. My fiance downloaded it for me and I am obsessed. Over Christmas break I filled 3 whole digi-journals with my Rock Citys!!! I intend on mixing and matching them with real paper projects to have layers and layers of mixed media greatness. What a nice idea for a post! It’s a shame that it’s a “trend” because the beloved watercolor has always been a favorite among artists.
